Valkyrie is a 40 ft pilot boat from 1930. She was operational from Hvaler, Norway until the war. During WW2 she was confiscated by the germans, but luckily returned back after the war was over. She was then used as a fishing vessel at Mørekysten, Norway.
Later on she became a pleasure craft, and I am the 4th owner since then. She spent the longest time with Professor Ryvarden, who owned Valkyrie («Von Honken» at the time) for nearly 50 years. He spent 12 years renovating her, and made sure she was always taken care of. After his passing, the boat was unfortunately not taken very good care of, and was sold and left to rot.
I bought Valkyrie in February 2023. I had been wanting a Colin Archer for a while, and when the ad for Valkyrie came up I couldn't resist. There was something special about her. I bought her before even seeing her, and travelled up to Molde which was her home at the time. I knew she was in very bad condition, but she was able to make the sail from Molde to Stavanger using engine. And so the renovation could begin.
When I bought Valkyrie, the most important thing for me was that the hull was in good condition. If it wasn't, the project would be too big and expensive. I knew there was a damage by the aft deck, which happened due to poor mooring during a storm. I am in the process of adding steel fittings to the railing,...
I could probably make 100 posts with pictures of rotten wood 😅 The deck has been the biggest, and most time consuming part of the project.
