Rotten wood

I could probably make 100 posts with pictures of rotten wood 😅 The deck has been the biggest, and most time consuming part of the project.

  • Material: Pine
  • Treatment: Raw linseed oil, mixed with tar and american terpetine

As soon as the masts were off, we got her inside and started ripping the deck apart. I knew it was rotten, but it was extremely more rotten than I thought it would be. We had to change most of the beams before we could start laying new deck planks.

During this process it is important with precise measurements, and you have to take future movements in the wood into consideration.

I get asked a lot by other wooden boat owners why I haven't varnished the deck, both for looks and protection. This is because it 1: gets very slippery, 2: the wood won't be able to breath, 3: can cause big damage if there is a tiny crack in the varnish, and water gets in.

Raw linseed oil was used for these types of boats back in the old days, and makes the wood more than enough water resistant, while the wood can still breath and move freely
